Pretoria - A report by the new Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu shows that the Madibeng Local Municipality has underspent by a whopping R35.5m on its municipal infrastructure grants (MIG).

According to the Sunday Independent, the report dated November last year shows that as a result the municipality has not achieved some of its service delivery promises. Areas included in the municipality are Hartbeespoort Dam, Brits, Damonsville and Mothotlung – the scene of recent violent service delivery protests which claimed the lives of three people.

The MIG provides finance for basic municipal infrastructure for poor households as well as for new infrastructure and the rehabilitation and upgrading of existing infrastructure.

Included in the AGs report was a statement by the sanitation task team, headed up by Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, who warned that the municipality’s wastewater treatment works needed urgent refurbishment. This was not done. As a result protests erupted with some residents saying they had been without water for three months after local water pumps broke down.
