Johannesburg - One of four men, accused of killing Major General Tirhani Maswanganyi, claimed he was tortured by police into admitting that the slain officer's wife was involved in the crime, the Saturday Star reported.

"They tubed me with a bucket of water, [nearly] drowning me with it...They also severely assaulted me," Roger Moseki told the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court on Friday.

"They told me that I should admit the fact that I was aware that Maswanganyi's wife has hired us to kill the general, but I could not do that because it was not true. I told them I don't even know who she is."

Moseki, Tshepo Mosai, Daniel Nefolovhodwe and Isaac Vele are facing murder charges after Maswanganyi's body was found, with his hands and feet bound, in a veld along the R101 in Hamaanskraal on 17 June.

Moseki was testifying at his bail application.

It was postponed to 18 September.
