Pretoria - A Pretoria prosecutor accused of murdering his girlfriend will remain in custody after the High Court in Pretoria dismissed his bail application on Friday.

Geoffrey Maponya, who has been suspended pending a disciplinary hearing, launched an appeal after a Pretoria magistrate refused him bail in September last year.

The 31-year-old Maponya is accused of murdering his Zimbabwean girlfriend Precious Sibanda, 20, at his flat in Pretoria and stuffing her body into a dustbin.

He was arrested in April hours after the woman's body was found in a rubbish bin outside a block of flats on Church Street.

The court found there was a risk that Maponya would flee and not attend his trial, which was due to start on 8 October.

He faces charges of murder, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and defeating the ends of justice.
