Murder suspect killed in KZN shoot-out

2012-01-13 18:02

Durban - A man wanted for murder and attempted murder was killed during a shoot-out in KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

"The suspect ran into the nearby bushes, exchanging gunfire with the police on Thursday," Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mdunge said.

Mzuzu Mnyandu, 37, was the prime suspect in the murder of a man at the KwaMashu hostel in March.

"Mnyandu also shot at a crowd in KwaMashu hostel, injuring several people," Mdunge said.

He was seen in the KwaMashu men's hostel and police followed up on the information.

"The suspect came out of the room and started shooting at police who shot back in self-defence," he said.

Mdunge said Mnyandu jumped from the first floor and fled on foot, firing shots at police.

Police chased him to the nearby bushes where they found him dead with a firearm lying next to his body.

"A police officer was shot and wounded on his thigh. He is in a stable condition in the hospital," he said.
