Pietermaritzburg - A homeless man, believed by some to have witnessed a break-in to shops in the area, was murdered and left wrapped in his blood-soaked blankets in Manchester Road on Friday.

The horrific murder is believed to be linked to a break-in at two shops that took place near the man’s sleeping place.

The man, only known to shop owners as “Casa”, was allegedly hit on the head with a concrete slab.

Shop owners in Manchester Road said they arrived at their shops on Friday to find they had been broken into.

“The burglars gained access to my shop via the roof. I suspect that Casa may have seen them breaking into the shop or leaving with the goods and that’s when they attacked him,” said Home Choice Linen and Blankets shop owner Yusuf Ebrahim.

Ebrahim said Casa had made a small parking bay in the Moosa’s Discount building his home for the past year.

“When I realised my shop was broken into, I sent one of my workers to go and ask Casa if he saw anything. That’s when we found him in a pool of blood and called 10111,” said Ebrahim.

Ebrahim said the burglars used a bolt cutter to cut through the ceiling and enter the shops. He said blankets were taken from his shop.

Owner of Africa Furniture, Abed Jameel, said the burglars also broke in through the roof of his shop and made off with small electronic goods such as speakers and music equipment, fishing rods and reels.

A street vendor said Casa suffered from a mental illness, but was always pleasant to the people around the business area.

Police spokesperson Constable Mthokozisi Ngobese said they did not want to link the murder to the break-ins.

• In another weekend murder, a man in his mid-thirties was stabbed to death and left on the Woodlands bridge in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday morning.

Ngobese said the man was found lying on the bridge with multiple stab wounds to his head.

“No arrests have been made,” he said.
