Murderer sentenced to life in jail

A 22-YEAR-OLD man was sentenced to life imprisonment plus 15 years yesterday for the murder and robbery of a couple whom he targeted on the street in Greytown last year.

Mbuyiseni Dlamini pleaded guilty to stabbing Lucky Arnold Zondi to death while robbing him and his companion, Nomtahndazo Mhlongo, on October 8 last year.

He said in a statement to court he and another man had seen the couple walking in the street and decided to rob them of “whatever possessions” they had. He had taken out his knife as they got close, he said.

Dlamini said the man (whom he later found out was Zondi) had resisted their demands.

He then stabbed him to force him to comply.

After stabbing Zondi, Dlamini and his ­accomplice took cash, cellphones and an unloaded firearm from the ­couple.

Judge Mohini Moodley said she could find no compelling or substantial circumstances that would warrant less than the minimum prescribed sentences for the crimes
