Johannesburg - A strike by MyCiTi bus drivers which disrupted several routes in Cape Town this week is over, a city official said on Thursday.

The two-day strike ended with an agreement facilitated by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) signed on Thursday afternoon by Transpeninsula Investments (TPI) and the striking drivers, said transport mayoral committee member Brett Herron.

"At least 80% of the drivers will be resuming their duties from now until the end of service tonight (Thursday). By tomorrow morning all drivers will report for duty and the MyCiTi bus service will then be fully operational."

He said the main route between Dunoon, Table View, the Civic Centre and the Waterfront as well as the route between the Cape Town International airport and the Civic station had not been affected on Thursday.

Several drivers of TPI vehicle operating company started striking at 05:00 on Wednesday.

Herron said at the time the strike was unprotected and that the reason for it was not known.

None of the buses serving the inner city routes had been running during the morning peak hour as a result.

Herron said drivers of other companies had been hired to help with route disruptions, but that strikers had barricaded the gates at the depot in Prestwich Street, Green Point.

He said the police were on the scene to help drivers get buses out of the depot.
