N2 reopens after Cape Town protests

2012-08-10 15:00

Cape Town - The N2 highway near Cape Town International Airport has been reopened after a service delivery protest disrupted traffic, officials say.

The highway was reopened in both directions, while the N2/Borchards Quarry airport approach road was also reopened, the City of Cape Town's disaster management spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said.

The police and metro police will continue to patrol the area.

About 500 people gathered from 04:00 to protest over poor service delivery, burning tyres, blocking the roads and throwing stones at passing motorists.

Petrol bombs were also thrown at police officers, Solomons-Johannes said.

A nearby Eyewitness News vehicle was stoned on the NY108 road in Gugulethu. Journalists inside the vehicle escaped injury.

In another protest on Friday morning, about 50 people were gathered on the corner of Lansdowne and Eisleben Roads in Crossroads.

"The group of people are expressing their concerns regarding the proposed building of a mall in the area and are picketing with placards."

The City said the protest was peaceful.

What is wrong with black people? cant they accept democracy and that we as coloured people didnt vote for their stinking and rotten ANC? Only the man above knows what the western cape would look like if we never existed. It would be pure black vs white, with whites, sadly, heading for the ocean.

      michael.bushes - 2012-08-10 16:05

@alicia, My impression is that the ordinary black south african doesnt want to work to advance but wants to laze around at work and want stuff given to them for free so they can live in luxury. I have met a few that are hard working, and that can sit down with a pen and paper and work things out but the ones i work with are mostly lazy and dont want to learn things properly, nor do they want to learn additional parts of the firm. Tension has now become a regular thing when work is supposed to be done and objectives met when i refuse to assist them. But have a look during the day and you will find them using their blackberrys to chat or find them walking around. I have even complained about some of them and has now resulted in me slowly being isolated by AA appointed black managers just because i want to work and see results. They even try to force their mother tongues onto me even though company policy states that English is the language for office. Even Afrikaaners abide by this rule with no problem, even when you can clearly hear them struggling to speak English, what makes them so special to think they have a right to speak their language in meetings when they know the workforce is diversified.

      michael.bushes - 2012-08-10 16:11

@alicia, Just look at this blogger called "amos motsai". Either he is a troll or a typical ANCYL member/sympathiser. A chap at my work didnt even know that ZUma was Mbeki's deputy president. You might think that we could reach down to blacks on grass root level, but i tell ya, the grass roots dont even own a computer and access to the internet from their blackberrys is most probably limited to checking emails and sending BBMs, with the remainder of the grass roots most likely to illiterate to understand what gets said to them or to uneducated to read. Its a hopeless situation, we need independence for the Cape, a secure region for coloureds and whites. Trust me, other than emigration, its the only way to secure our future. They hate the fact that we voted mostly for the DA

      jean.tredoux.5 - 2012-08-10 16:13

Amos... Go have your emotional outburst in front of mommy!!! You have the full 'right' to protest but to say you will make a certain part of SA ungovernable is an act similar to terrorism!

      Jellyarse - 2012-08-10 16:46

Amos - your ignorance will be the death of this country - that;'s obviously what you want - civil war, bloodshed, an excuse not to work to build anything. You are the vilest of scum!

      tsotsibaby - 2012-08-10 16:49

Lmao....Look at Michael and these white teens.Michael you are coloured so your complaints are void by default. #Power to the people though

      michael.bushes - 2012-08-10 16:52

@tsotsibaby Why void by default because I am coloured? Lets hear you vomit your racism. Come come, im waiting for your response.

      mark.richardson.3914207 - 2012-08-10 16:57

Send the lot to joburg, get this movement forward thinking for a referendum . The Republic of Western Cape and stuff the ANC once and for all. Watch out for the new direct flights from Ghana , ivory Coast and Angola to Cape Town , all taking the place of the direct flights to London by the goverment owned flag carrier. The Cape goes DARK , the lights will forever be out.

      sharon.a.marks.9 - 2012-08-10 17:22

@amos - pi-- off back to the EC where you lot came from - squatter

      tsotsibaby - 2012-08-10 17:30

" My impression is that the ordinary black south african doesnt want to work to advance but wants to laze around at work and want stuff given to them for free so they can live in luxury " Michael, Coloureds are part of the poorest in this country. You cannot claim superiority while your brothers and sisters are all over the streets doing drugs and crime. #Power to the people

      michael.bushes - 2012-08-10 17:37

@mzukisijola.jose1 This has buggerall to do with serving whites as masters on the part of us as coloured people, but has all to do with whites and coloured people now facing a similar future under black rule. Just look at all the rhetoric coming from the ANC about us: oversupply of us in the WC, we dont know who our grandfathers are. We also experience AA exclusion, yet all we want to do is to get a job and get educated because we have high matric pass rates. If we are struggling to survive in post 1994 and get excluded, what does the future for whites hold, those whites who are still on school?

      devon.riley.52 - 2012-08-10 17:38

Well as a whitey who finances your handouts I say on behalf of the coloureds stay out of the WC troll

      michael.bushes - 2012-08-10 17:42

@tsotsibaby "You cannot claim superiority while your brothers and sisters are all over the streets doing drugs and crime" Yes, there is a problem amongst us regarding drug abuse and crime. I wont deny this, but drug and alcohol abuse doesnt affect even 10% of us. And where in my statement did i claim to be superior? You cant have a proper debate, you are politically and intellectually bankcrupt, to even have made such statements

      irene.buthelezi.1 - 2012-08-10 17:51

@Michael ~ Something which really fascinates me is that blacks, coloureds and Indians all suffered equally under apartheid but isn't it strange how it's only the coloureds and Indians that lifted themselves out of their past and improved their lot in life. Blacks on the other hand can only protest and demand and wait for their filthy cANCer to help them. Just too lazy to get off their backsides and do something for themselves.

      abe.taylor125 - 2012-08-10 18:13

shame on you, michael...you are a typical coloured who aspire to whiteness...you are a troll and quite ignorant yourself, judging from the bullsjit you talking bout to miesies alicia...if it was not for the "black people" you would not have had a opportunity to express yourself the way you do...show some respect and go and see how these people live...

      tsotsibaby - 2012-08-10 18:16

@Micheal Look you specifically attacked all blacks for the same problems facing coloureds. Irene, I dont know how you came to the conclusion that only Indians and coloureds uplifted themselves. You believe what you want to believe......i guess..... #Power to the people though #the Struggle continues #Amandlaaa

      irene.buthelezi.1 - 2012-08-10 18:19

@Abe ~ Get over yourself already. The chip on your shoulder is really weighing you down. @Tsoti ~ GFY creep.

      nana.akua.12914 - 2012-08-10 19:05

As long as we still have the black or white lingo, we are far from liberty. They fight each other, they do no good and will achieve no good.

      michael.bushes - 2012-08-10 19:07

@abe taylor If it wasnt for blacks, apartheid would have ended years ago already like in australia and new zealand. put THAT in your pipe and smoke it

      michael.bushes - 2012-08-10 19:11

@mark.richardson. These blind coloured and white unionists better start waking up. The tighter and tighter this cANCer turns the screws of exclusion into us, whatever animosity exists between whites and ourselves will dissolve and we will have to fight for our independence either by ballot or by guns

      hendrik.verwoerd.94 - 2012-08-10 23:10

Michael and Alicia, you make statements that will bring this country nowhere. You can not wish away the "black people. They are here to stay. What is your solution? Rehoboth tried the same thing to get independancy and it did not work. You will need the vote of "them" to be able to win elections. White people accept incomers from other provinces, as long as they are not black. Us readers should make a policy, do not just make statements, suggest a solution.

  • devon.riley.52 - 2012-08-10 15:42

Service delivery protest my foot. This is the ANC trying to destabilise the city. A few days ago Patricia De Lille tried to have a meating with them to adress issues, but they disrupted the meeting while acting like hooligans

      hendrik.verwoerd.94 - 2012-08-10 23:13

Have you ever tried speking to the people to hear exactly why they are protesting? I even suggested to a group of people to join the protest as their service delivery is so poor.

  • herchwynf - 2012-08-10 15:43

This is TERRORISM and they should be handled like TERRORISTS. The City of Cape Town, or the National Government need to bring in the army and act swiftly. Ironically, they live off the tax payer dime, but they make every effort to ensure that tax payers can't get to work.

  • parsons.za - 2012-08-10 15:48

"The group of people are expressing their concerns". Most people I know don't express their concerns by throwing rocks at cars and petrol bombs at police.

      rob.gunning.1 - 2012-08-10 15:56

You didn't read the story properly. They are two seperate incidents.

      rvbrink - 2012-08-10 17:17

      Its called "affirmative action"

  • nicholas.graan - 2012-08-10 15:52

The ANC could not win the Western Cape through civilized democratic elections so now they are trying destabilize it through the ANCYL. Violence and disruption is pretty much the only thing they are good at. Goes to show that once again, the wishes of the people are irrelevant if it does not suit the ANC.

      devon.riley.52 - 2012-08-10 15:57

Time to declare the Western Cape an independent republic, Fk them they wont destroy our city.

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-08-10 16:04

Just put up a border post at Leeu Gamka - problem solved. (It excludes Beaufort West, but that's ANC territory anyway)

  • rob.gunning.1 - 2012-08-10 15:54

Is this not considered a terrorist action? If not, why not?

      devon.riley.52 - 2012-08-10 16:08

      Because they are bleck?

  • Stewart Croucamp - 2012-08-10 16:05

ANCYL Hooligans. Bloody cowards. They should be shot at with live ammunition!

  • emil.vanmoorsel - 2012-08-10 16:21

This is what is paid for by the secret funds.

  • Adil Smit - 2012-08-10 16:26

Throwing petrol bombs at people means you want to hurt them - are these not just criminals? Hope they're on CCTV so they can be prosecuted.

  • mzukisijola.jose1 - 2012-08-10 16:28

It is said that the poor and uneducated people has been used this way by stupid western cape ancyl, that's way anc will never win this province we had so dam who will mislead us for their own agender sies

      Wally Walters - 2012-08-10 16:41

Does the ancyl want overthrow the DA governing body in the Western cape. They will not succeed! Is the anc government behind this, I wonder.

  • andre.ackermann.14 - 2012-08-10 16:37

Racism, apartheid and negative provacative actions and mindsets are long dead in the minds of most whites and many blacks. It is the ANC and its allies that keep it alive...its easy to destroy and disrupt, it is wisdom and vision which builds, but it is clearly lacking in the minds and hearts of ofd these selfish bastards who belong to themselves!

      rantwa - 2012-08-10 17:04

As a citzen of SA,I think to solve this problem in this province, national government must intervene before it is too late.,,!!

      irene.buthelezi.1 - 2012-08-10 17:58

Rantswa ~ National government is already there. Who else do you think is behind these protests?

  • hallo.daar.56 - 2012-08-10 16:47

    Pathetic law enforcement.

  • douglas.reid.921 - 2012-08-10 16:57

Please clarify: if someone is about to throw a petrol bomb at me can I shoot him in self defense???

      aqeel.meyer - 2012-08-10 19:26

if only! Then u be branded racist like in anything u do or say.

  • andre.kuhn.583 - 2012-08-10 17:15

Independence for the Cape!? Lets vote. Yes:Thumbs up No: Thumbs down I would be very intersting to see the results.

  • rvbrink - 2012-08-10 17:34

With a ANCYL leader like Julius "Mampara" Malema, what else can you expect??

  • dee.980 - 2012-08-10 17:57

I have a solution : 1. Let all W.Cape tax payers pay directly to W.Cape government - for beneficiation business development of e.g fruit canning, AND SELF HELP / TRAINING SCHEME paved roads, house building and sanitation etc of existing shanty areas. If the unemployed in those areas are are willing to learn & build those areas at minimum wage - employ them to develop their communities. 2. A freeze on foreigners and E.Cape influx for 3years unless they can prove they are employed. Paying tax to the national fiscus is pouring money down a wastehole.

      delish7564 - 2012-08-11 01:48

Dee, you need to define "foreigner" carefully. I am one of those and believe me it is very difficult to even be allowed to stay here despite the fact that I don't take anything from the State, nor would I expect to. I am not permitted to work as a condition of my stay here, but have to pay for everything e.g medical care, education etc. Please don't lump all foreigners together. We bring hard currency into this country and spend it locally, trying to improve the economy and by default, it's citizens!

  • jacquespatrickellis - 2012-08-10 18:55

I am really sorry to read about the general mindset of the people who used this kind of method to protest as well as the people who are commenting here. To the people protesting - given your ability to get together the way you did this morning means you are clever enough to devise a more civil way to get heard without hurting innocent fellow South Africans? To the people who have been commenting - we are all South Africans - why generalise? We are all building a South Africa where we all can live and thrive right? We are all doing whatever we personally can to increase the standard of living for ourselves AND our neighbors - right? Jacques Ellis - concerned

  • amos.motsai - 2012-08-10 19:05

We don't want to win this Province we want to make it ungovernable that it if we want it we can taKe it anytime

      devon.riley.52 - 2012-08-10 20:31

Bring it on you chop you won't succeed

  • ratsaka.eugene - 2012-08-10 19:11

Protests in Cape Town are a sign that the DA government's interest is on the rich, just like their apartheid brothers. They can't even run a province, but they want to run the country, shame. Did you know that they are one of the municipalities that had an unqualified audit? Grrrrr

      aqeel.meyer - 2012-08-11 06:55

dude, maybe u must look in the way the ANC is running the country! Education, health services are pathetic. Crime has escalated in the past 18yrs. Government are run by a bunch of bafoons that has no idea on how to run a country. This government is steering South Africa into a economic crash like Zimbabwe. All that they see is what they can get now and dont think of what the results of actions may be. If all parties(political and racial) try to work together instead against eachother then SA would be a great country

  • aqeel.meyer - 2012-08-10 19:19

what in the world is this stupid ANC YOUTH LEAGUE think?\r\nThey must really wake up! Things dont just fall out of the sky like rain.. \r\nHousing in this country is not the responsibility of the DA in the western cape! Its the responsibility of the government! Aka Department of Housing.\r\nThis idiots must rather make fire under Zuma's ass since he is the chief in charge.\r\nThen again, its true what is said! All political ball game to create chaos in the country to make the DA look like the guilty party.\r\nThe people of this country are so blind, everytime before elections parties promise the heaven and earth, afterwards nothing happens.people say \we not voting for them again\ but ja,come elections the process starts all over again.\r\nReally,people must wake up and see the truth

  • manu.dibango.96 - 2012-08-10 19:45

Whew the number of racist comments to this story is shocking, and all because some people decide to protest. So if a person decides to protest (and the person happens to be black) then it means that 1. The person doesn't want to work 2. The person is undemocratic 3. The person is a criminal 4. They are from the eastern cape ... so they must leave the western cape 5. They want hand outs 6. etc., As a dispassionate observer these kind of attitudes worry me greatly. Why? Because history shows (time and time again) that when a minority are so openly disdainful of the majority bad things happen. What kind of future are you trying to create? Do you think that these kind of hostile attitudes against those who outnumber you will not provoke a response? Behave responsibly.

      Adil Smit - 2012-08-10 23:51

Throwing petrol bombs and stones at people in cars are criminal acts and should be punished - whether they do it on the N2 or where they live. It may be your loved one that gets hurt next. A peaceful protest is something completely different - but the Youth League did promise to make the W- Cape ungovernable - so violence is to be expected.
