New-look Mandela bridge opens
Johannesburg - A carnival mood took over the Nelson Mandela Bridge in central Johannesburg on Friday as the city's first citizen, mayor Amos Masondo opened the newly decorated structure.
"In Paris they have the Eiffel Tower, in New York the Statue of Liberty and South Africa has the Mandela Bridge."
As Masondo cut a ribbon, two large banners bearing the image of the former president Mandela dropped down to mark the symbolic opening of the bridge ahead of the World Cup next week.
On the sides of the bridge, another large banner with various flags and depicting people celebrating was on display.
"We call on residents of South Africa to open their hearts and give a warm embrace to our visitors."
Masondo displayed his dancing skills as he joined in the diski dance.
