Durban - A National Freedom Party member was killed in a KwaMashu hostel, north of Durban, the party said on Friday.

NFP secretary general Nhlanhla Khubisa said Elijah Jele, 45, was shot dead around 19:00 on Thursday when he was entering the hostel from work.

Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed Jele was killed at the men's hostel on Thula Road. The motive for the shooting was not known. No arrests had been made.

Sphamandla Zakheni Gwala, 21, the son of the party's national working committee member Bhungu Mgezeni Gwala, was also killed in his house in KwaMashu on 18 September.

Khubisa said four men shot at him from outside while he was opening the curtains of his KwaMashu E section house.

The motive was not known and no arrests have been made.

NFP president Zanele Magwaza Msibi condemned the killings.

She called on provincial MEC for Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu and police minister Nathi Mthethwa to ensure police visibility by stationing a mobile police station at the hostel.

"What worries us most is the fact that no arrests and convictions are being made on the killing of our members at the hostel," Msibi said.

Khubisa said the NFP was a threat, and that is why its members were being killed.

He would not be drawn to say who was threatened by the party.
