NG Church employs gay man

Johannesburg - A gay music teacher and organist fired by a Pretoria NG Church has found work again, with a different branch of the same church in the Eastern Cape, according to Sunday's Rapport.

Johan Strydom was approached by the NG Church in Kareedouw after its congregation and preacher, Dr Kobus Bohnen, learnt Strydom was living in Jeffreys Bay.

In September 2008 the Moreleta Park, Pretoria NG Church apologised to Strydom for unfairly discriminating against him by firing him when it learnt he was in a homosexual relationship. The high court in Pretoria also ordered the church to pay him R87 000 in damages.

Strydom told Rapport the money brought little comfort.

"It was rather the hand a small community like Kareedouw extended to me that rekindled my faith in the NG Church and in people."

The Moreleta Park church decided not to appeal the high court's ruling, including in its reasons that "the fundamental right of the church to freely believe in the Bible was not violated".
