Johannesburg - The NPA in the Western Cape has welcomed the life sentence handed to "Facebook rapist" Thabo Bester for the murder of Johannesburg model Nomfundo Tyhulu.

"We are happy... and hope that today's sentence will help them [Tyhulu's family] find closure," National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said in a statement on Thursday.

"We are very happy that the judge agrees with us that there were no compelling reasons for the court to impose a lesser sentence than life imprisonment..."

Bester, 23, who appeared in the Western Cape High Court before acting Judge Judith Cloete and assessor advocate Juliana Thayson, was also sentenced to an additional 25 years on a charge of aggravated armed robbery.

This related to possessions that he took from Tyhulu after killing her.

Bester stabbed Tyhulu, 23, in the chest, in a B&B in Cape Town in September last year. The two were on holiday together.

They had met at a BMW dealership in Sandton, Johannesburg, where Tyhulu sold him a car, and started a long-term relationship.

After stabbing Tyhulu, Bester flew to Durban.

On his departure from the bed-and-breakfast, he told reception staff that Tyhulu was still sleeping and that she should not to be disturbed before 14:00.

These remarks were an aggravating factor, the judge said.
