Johannesburg - The crew of a fishing trawler had to be rescued after the ship ran aground at De Bakke, in Mossel Bay, on Sunday morning, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

NSRI duty controller Ian Hamilton said the crew of the Emmanuelle sent out a distress call at 04:00, when the trawler drifted into rocks 50m s from the shore and started leaning to one side.

The 12 crew members were taken to a rescue base where they received medical attention.

The SA Maritime Safety Authority would investigate the cause of the incident, Hamilton said.
