NZ rugby players give SA cops DNA

2012-06-26 07:25

Wellington - The New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) on Tuesday pledged to fully co-operate with a South African police investigation following an allegation that a member of its under-20s team raped a woman.

NZRU chief executive Steve Tew said one player, and possibly also a teammate who was rooming with him, had provided DNA to police investigating the alleged incident.

The allegations were made on Saturday after a 22-year-old Cape Town woman said she was raped on Friday night, following the team's loss to South Africa in the Junior World Championship.

"Both players and management co-operated fully with the authorities in South Africa," Tew told Radio New Zealand.

"We did not leave South Africa until we had their permission to do so and if there's any further assistance they require we'll continue to co-operate fully.

"It's an incredibly serious matter, both for the alleged victim and for the alleged perpetrator," he added.

Team protocols

Tew said the under-20 team, also known as the Baby Blacks, were given advice on how to behave before travelling to the tournament, where they lost 22-16 to South Africa in the final of the IRB Junior World Championship at Newlands stadium in Cape Town.

"Our guys get a lot of advice in this area, we have team protocols in place," he said.

"The fact that it appears a young woman was taken to one of the players' bedrooms is a direct breach of that protocol."

South African police spokesperson Vish Naidoo said reports in South Africa that four Baby Blacks players were involved in the incident were unfounded.

Can’t remember

Naidoo said the woman who made the allegations told police she had been drinking and remembered little about what happened.

"The woman said she did not have any recollection of exactly what happened," he told Radio New Zealand in a telephone interview from South Africa.

"There are processes we will be following to help her."

Forensic experts combed the Southern Sun Hotel Newlands on Saturday for DNA evidence in a hushed investigation, The New Age newspaper reported on Monday.

Hotel staff told the newspaper the woman came to the hotel Friday night and told the front desk she was visiting a cousin. She knew the players were staying at the hotel and had apparently met them before.

"According to some of my colleagues she was apparently drunk. And on Saturday morning she called her parents to fetch her at the hotel after claims that she was raped," a hotel employee told the publication.

"Her parents insisted on opening a case of rape. We are not certain that she was raped, but there was blood found on a sheet on a bed."

    ALLEGED rape please Mr reporter.

      neville.mclean - 2012-06-26 10:42

U cant add the word "alleged" in direct quotes from a source, thats what the inverted commas are for.

      Kala - 2012-06-26 12:04

If she can't remember what happened how can she remember being raped?

  • jean.tredoux.5 - 2012-06-26 07:45

How one person can screw up a brilliant end to a great tournament... And no I'm not buying it that she was raped.

  • samuelk.mohlakoana - 2012-06-26 07:55

Where was the cousin during all this happenings? cant remember what transpired becouse she was drunk? Who will have the better explanation to the court if she cant recall? Its very sad to hear stories like this.how much more in the international involvement?

      Bulls - 2012-06-26 10:06

The cops are busy collecting bags of sperms, pubic hair, nails, saliva etc. Those speak out a loud explanation in court.

      James - 2012-06-26 14:15

Bulls-Balls - they don't really speak any loud words, the player could still admit to having sex with her... She can't remember anything so her statement is unreliable.

I am horrified at some of these comments made about this woman. Surely if someone speaks up and says they were raped, they should be able to do so without fear of being judged. Disgusting! Let the correct procedures of investigation go ahead before blurting out your uninnformed opinions!

      gavin.lott.9 - 2012-06-26 08:13

Very true Alison, but this isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened! if it's true the book should be thrown at the perps..but if it's not the boys will have to live with this black cloud over there heads for many years to come.

      Alison Smit - 2012-06-26 09:22

Gavin - very true but if it isnt true then she too will have to live with the consequences. All I am saying is that a person should NEVER be put down for speaking up about being a rape victim! NEVER! Drunk or not drunk! Even if they may or may not have put themselves in a compromising position! There is no justification for raping someone! Not one. It is obviously a sensitive matter and I trust the investigation will bring more clarity on the matter - and until then people should refrain from pointing fingers until there is more clarity...unless you can say you were present and witness to it!

      Richard - 2012-06-26 10:17

Drunk or not drunk, It's no excuse to rape someone. People who pass comments on reports should wait for the facts before passing judgement. The boys must face the music if it is prooved to be true. Disgusting to pass comments like this... Bottom line, No person wishes to be abused. Being drunk is no excuse to take advantage of someone.

      gavin.lott.9 - 2012-06-26 11:31

      Agreed.

      James - 2012-06-26 14:16

At the same time I do nt think its fair on the boys if it's untrue...

  • luvo.luvos - 2012-06-26 07:58

No women should wander into hotels where players are staying during big tournaments. These stories are becoming more prevalent. We are waiting for another one absurd story after the Euro 2012 that is currently running.

      karolina.dean.5 - 2012-06-26 08:09

Women should be able to wander wherever and whenever we want to. But since this is not a perfect world, we can't. HOWEVER - this young girls should NOT have got to the player room. My comment yesterday was deleted by some genius at News24 for saying that it appears she went to the room on her own accord - and I am pretty sure she wasn't going to discuss Nuclea Physics!

  • Marco - 2012-06-26 07:59

dear commentators maybe one day one of your daughters will get the "rufies" (rohypnol) treatment.you can buy it along with all the regular stuff from your friendly neighbourhood dealer.of course these guys can do no wrong because they are golden boys.!@#$ you creeps

      samantha.lister.09 - 2012-06-26 11:14

It is too early to say what happened, but it is a suspicious circumstance because you're dealing with relatively well-known men. It garners a lot of attention for her. I also know of a girl who after one too many ended up sleeping with a guy. A few days later she cried rape because she regretted doing it. She obviously went to the hotel willingly, after that we cannot say what happened! But there are women that use rape as an excuse for having done something they regret.

    Another win for groupie united.

  • melania.nel - 2012-06-26 08:19

4 men were accused and according to this article 'both' gave DNA. That's truly special reporting.

  • cyprianm1 - 2012-06-26 08:31

Sober or drunk rape is rape some coments here are from people whom i think they dnt have daughters mothers or sisters no woman in this world deserves to be raped NO MEANS NO

  • Justin - 2012-06-26 08:34

Amazing how everyone on this forum has already made up their minds....

  • JamesBothaThisBookWillChangeYourLife - 2012-06-26 08:42

Remember this case still needs to go to court and the women testimony needs to be tested, was it rape was it voluntarily, I DONT KNOW AND I PROMISE YOU DONT KNOW EITHER!! If you really do know please present then the person you believe is telling the truth , would like to hear your story in court, till then let’s do not judge anyone, South Africans is very good in judging and to have no mercy if you don’t believe me read the stuff that most of you is saying here, scary... This is an international case let leave it to a real judge in court to decide who is telling the truth and who is not...

  • victor.freeman.39 - 2012-06-26 08:45

Rape is rape and if guilty, the law should take its course. I would be extremely disappointed in my daughter if she went to the players rooms, had alcohol and then didn't remember what the hell went on after that. Do not put yourself in a situation that might end up going pearshaped.

  • tim.kilpin - 2012-06-26 08:56

To much speculation. Let the facts come out and the invsetigation run its course before we judge either way

  • wayne.bayman - 2012-06-26 09:12

A woman might have been raped and most of the guys commenting immediatly believes she is lying. And then some of you say, 'She should not have been near the hotel'. You guys make me sick, by your logic it should be ok for criminals to break into your house if you do not have burglar bars on you house. You all deserve to be raped in prison for you comments.

      chris.cunning.14 - 2012-06-26 10:13

"Might have". Yes, so everyone is allowed to speculate. It's very easy for someone to call "rape" when it was consensual and suddenly after her drunken night regrets what happened and now needs some sort of comfort and wants to punish him for maby not agreeing to date her. Girls love the power that comes with the rugby players and status, they throw themselves at them, could end up being very complicated. If she was drugged, tests would show that and that would come out on the reports, nothing like that.

  • ntombizodwa.letty - 2012-06-26 09:24

The hotel manager must provide the camera to the police station to make it simple for everyone, bcoz this is costing our money for taking so long.Damsh*t the lady must come with her cousin that gave her a permission 2come 4a visit to the hotel. Please parent werent de foe heaven sake how can they b so sure that was rape or sumthing for exchanged? SAPS must get to the point soon bcos sumthing is coming after.

  • brenda.yelvertonburns - 2012-06-26 10:19

Thank goodness we do not have the jury system in this country. The vast majority of people commenting here have decided that the girl is lying and the golden 'baby' blacks could not possibly be guilty of any wrongs. Whether or not she should have been in their room is not the issue at hand. And by their own rules of conduct and protocol, the players should not have a female in their room in the first place!! If they are capable of breaking protocol, then perhaps they are also capable of doing other, more nasty things. Perhaps this will be a lesson to others out there - DO NOT allow females into your bedroom as you just may be setting yourself up for false allegations. Only time and a thorough investigation will tell whether this allegation is false or not.

      Danny - 2012-06-26 11:55

"Perhaps this will be a lesson to others out there - DO NOT allow females into your bedroom as you just may be setting yourself up for false allegations." Do you not see the problem with this statement? It quite clearly shows a common conception that men are guilty before proven innocent.

  • Saleé - 2012-06-26 12:39

If I remember correctly, most people were behind Zuma's rape accuser (a lot still are, notwithstanding the fact Zuma was acquitted). Why can't we give this complainant a chance? Let's wait for the law to take its course. It's not a lot to ask for in a civilised, democratic country. Bring the thumbs-down. I could't care less.

  • ronwynne.braum - 2012-06-26 13:26

What the hell else did she want in their hotel room? Some tea and cake?????

      brenda.yelvertonburns - 2012-06-27 16:44

OK Ron, so you are, by your admission, a male who believes that if a woman agrees to going home with you for a nightcap, she has agreed to sex? Furthermore, even if she did initially agree to sex, she is entitled to change her mind at any point and say NO.
