Johannesburg - A housing department official was arrested in Mogale City for allegedly soliciting a bribe from an RDP house beneficiary, the Gauteng department of housing said on Tuesday.
"He allegedly solicited a R5 000 bribe from the beneficiary, saying that he'll sort out things for them but the beneficiary called police," housing spokesperson Mandla Sidu said.
The official from the department's Sedibeng regional office appeared on corruption charges in the Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court on Monday and he was released on R1 500 bail.
He was expected back in court next week.
Gauteng housing MEC Nomvula Mokonyane said: "We want to send a strong warning to both the public and those officials who engage in corrupt activities that we will deal with them harshly."
She urged members of the public who have been defrauded by the official to come forward with information "which may assist in the successful prosecution of the official".
Meanwhile, another man was arrested in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni for allegedly selling government stands and houses.
Sidu could not immediately provide details regarding neither this man's court appearance nor the charges he faced.
