Bloemfontein - A Winburg man jumped into his car in the middle of the night and chased after two suspects who had stolen his bakkie - and he wasn’t wearing a stitch of clothing.

Former Free State athlete Anton du Toit, 48, told Volksblad that he had been asleep in bed when he heard the engine of his bakkie being switched on.

“Without thinking twice, I jumped out of bed, grabbed my keys and cellphone and chased after them. I asked my wife, Heloise to call everyone.”

He saw the bakkie’s back lights and followed it, even when it turned onto a dirt road where the suspects eventually stopped, jumped out and abandoned the car, running into the bushes.
“I was careful and didn’t stop. They could see my lights but I had no idea where they were. I also didn’t know if they were armed.”

His father and stepmom arrived soon afterwards and Du Toit used old oil cloths in his father’s car to cover himself.

The criminals had broken down the gate to the property to gain access to the bakkie.
