Cape Town - Parliament's justice and constitutional development portfolio committee has called for nominations for a new deputy public protector.

The term of office of current Deputy Public Protector Mamiki Shai ends on November 30, the committee said in a statement on Wednesday.

The nominee should be a South African citizen.

The candidate should be admitted as an advocate or attorney and have practised as such for at least 10 years, or lectured in law at a university for at least 10 years.

The nominee should also have specialised knowledge of or experience in the administration of justice, public administration, or public finance, have been a member of Parliament for at least 10 years, or acquired any combination of experience mentioned above for at least 10 years.

The successful nominee would be appointed deputy public protector for a period determined by the president, but not exceeding seven years.

The remuneration and other terms and conditions of employment would from time to time be determined by the National Assembly.

The deputy public protector would have such powers as might be delegated by the public protector.

Whenever the public protector was unable to perform the functions of her/his office or while the appointment of a person to the office of public protector was pending, the deputy would perform such functions, the committee said.

The closing date for nominations is November 9 2012 at 17:00.
