Johannesburg - Independent Newspapers editorial executive Moegsien Williams will take over the editorship of The New Age daily newspaper, TNA Media announced on Tuesday.

Current editor Ryland Fisher had tendered his resignation.

"Ryland has always indicated that it was never his intention to stay at The New Age for a long time," TNA Media's chief executive Nazeem Howa said in a statement.

"He came for a four-month project and stayed for 17. This should be an indication of his commitment."

Fisher would leave the newspaper at the end of August to return to his consultancy work in Cape Town.

Howa thanked him for his contribution to the newspaper and wished him well.

"In Moegsien, we have found an able replacement for Ryland and someone who will build on his success," he said.

Williams is the Editor-in-Chief of Independent Newspapers Gauteng and is the group's editorial director.

He previously edited The Star and Saturday Star, the Cape Times, the Cape Argus and Weekend Argus, and Pretoria News.

Williams will be the paper's fourth editor in two years.

Vuyo Mvoko was the newspaper's first editor, but he quit before its launch. Henry Jeffreys was appointed in his stead in 2010, but left a few months later.

Fisher then took over as acting editor.
