Cape Town - Lieutenant General Arno Lamoer will take office as the new police commissioner for the Western Cape next week, the Cape Argus reported on Thursday.

Lamoer will take over from Lieutenant General Mzwandile Petros, who recently became Gauteng's police commissioner.

Lamoer entered onto the national policing stage as a divisional commissioner, first as head of operational response services, and then as head of visible policing for the entire country.

Former community safety MEC Lennit Max described Lamoer as a policeman who had worked through the ranks and who had served as one of his key and trusted lieutenants while he was provincial commissioner.

“I will come down to assess what the previous provincial commissioner put in place," is what Lamoer said of his immediate priorities as provincial police commissioner.
