Durban - A newborn baby has been found dead in a pit toilet in the Hlanzeni settlement in Umkomaas, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said on Thursday.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics were alerted to the incident after the baby was discovered by local police.

"It is understood that the police were alerted to the incident and discovered the newborn in the pit toilet. They alerted ER24 paramedics," he said.

Meiring said an ER24 paramedic climbed down into the pit toilet to recover the baby.

"They found that he was already dead. There was nothing that they could do to revive him."

Provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane confirmed the incident, saying the Umkomaas Police Station was investigating a case of concealment of birth.

"It is alleged that the baby was dumped on 1 September. The body was retrieved today and removed to the state mortuary where a post-mortem will be conducted.

"It has not been established at this stage if the baby was still-born or alive at the time it was dumped. No arrest has been made at this stage," he said.
