Newborn found in Soweto drain

Johannesburg - The body of a newborn girl was found in a drain near a park in Protea South, Soweto, on Tuesday, police said.

A child who was playing in the park saw a head in the drain, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

Emergency services were alerted and the baby's body was found.

"[It] looks like the child was a newborn and was thrown into the drain," said Makhubela.

A case of concealment of birth had been opened.
