Johannesburg - A newspaper vendor who helped stop three prisoners from escaping has been presented with an award for bravery, the correctional services ministry said on Sunday.

"We commend Mr [Aaron Vhumani] Mkahru for his act of bravery which resulted in the re-capturing of three dangerous awaiting-trial detainees," said correctional services minister Sibusiso Ndebele in a statement.

In March last year Mkharu raised the alarm when he saw three men trying to scale the wall of the Pretoria Central Prison using their orange overalls.

Serial jail-breaker Bongani Moyo and his armed robbery co-accused Themba Dube and Khumbulani Sibanda were promptly re-arrested near the prison.

At the time, Moyo had made three attempts at escape.

He walked out of the Pretoria Magistrate's Court in August 2011, while on crutches.

He also previously escaped from the Boksburg prison in March 2011. He was re-arrested near the Beitbridge border post in Limpopo, while making his way back into South Africa from Zimbabwe.
