Bloemfontein - Two people arrested on Thursday in connection with the murder of a top Free State official Noby Ngombane are relatives, police said.
Police and his wife Nokwanda believed his murder was politically motivated, but spokesperson Superintendent Annelie Wrensch said this had been ruled out.
"I can tell you it is not political," she told Sapa.
Ngombane was murdered in the driveway of his Hillsboro home on the night of March 22 when he went out to investigate a car that had pulled up in the driveway.
The twenty-eight-year-old man and the 23-year-old woman were taken to the Bloemfontein district court for a first appearance.
They face initial charges of murder.
Ngombane was the head of the Free State government's policy monitoring and evaluation unit in the premier's office. He was also the premier's and the provincial government spokesperson, as well as a close confidant of the premier and a former spokesperson of the African National Congress in the Free State.
At the time of his death he had also been embroiled in a number of disagreements with department heads.
