Kimberley - Eight men and a woman were arrested in Kimberley on Monday for allegedly stealing diesel from the Sol Plaatje Municipality, Northern Cape police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Hendrik Swart said six of those arrested were municipal employees.

A chemical was added to the municipality's fuel when the theft was suspected. Police took samples from 13 vehicles to test whether the chemical was present.

A double cab Isuzu bakkie belonging to one of the suspects, 623 litres of diesel in plastic containers, and 85 empty containers were confiscated.
