No arrests in taxi rank assault

Johannesburg - An investigation into an assault on two young women at the Noord Street minibus taxi rank in Johannesburg last month remains a priority, police said on Tuesday.

"No one has been arrested yet, but investigations are continuing," said Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

On December 30, the women were shopping near the taxi rank in the city centre when about 60 men started following and harassing them.

The women have been identified only as Zama and Nomthandazo because of the nature of their harassment.

Nomthandazo wore a black miniskirt and Zama a black top with white bra straps showing. The men taunted them about their clothes while groping them, pulling at their clothing and taking photos with their cellphones.

Almost a week later, the two opened a case of sexual assault, indecent assault and crimen injuria at the Johannesburg central police station. Dlamini said the police had not given up on the case, and were busy following leads.

Closed-circuit television footage of the assault formed part of the investigation, but the faces of the perpetrators were not clearly visible.

The attack drew widespread condemnation, with the ANC Women's League describing it as a "gross violation".

"South Africans have fought hard for the freedoms we enjoy and it is not acceptable that a group of depraved men felt they could infringe on these girls' rights by harassing and abusing them," spokesperson Troy Martens said.

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele called the act "barbaric", while Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane described the men's behaviour as "animal-like".

Either a crime has been commited, or it has not. If it has, which would seem obvious in this case, an arrest should be made and a charge laid! If it's a priority, then what is taking so long? It's been 3 weeks! With Video footage!

They are too scared. Enough evidence is available for arrests. SAPS is useless!

When you see someone wearing like a prostitute with naked thighs and moving a prostitute, what do you call that person? You can't wear like a prostitute if you are not looking for it. If one 's parent leaves her to go into the street with naked thighs which she could not exposes her's, she obviously do not like her daughter.

Personal values and preferences aside...and concluding that arguing with you is the equivalent of bashing my face against a brick wall, I will stoop to your level and just call you names: TROLL!!!

I personally love it when a woman dresses provocatively. It does not give any man any rights whatsoever if a woman walks around wearing very little. It is not an invitation that says "BANG ME PLEASE!". If I had to live in a country where women wore turtle necks and long pants with closed shoes and a hat all the time, I would probably move. Just because a woman choses to dress a certain way does not make her a prostitute and she is not asking for it. And people who think that way are ignorant and belong back in the stone age.

Wow. What an intelligent, well considered argument there, eradingoana. Bet your mother is proud of you. I agree with Gideon.

if you are showing yourself and please take note "yourself" in an inviting manner as if (yourself) is a national symbol, then am sorry to say this "you are indeed inviting nationalization" heh heh heh heh! keep your assets for your partner at home. Viva Arab and strict beliefs Viva! Even the Holy Bible States "1 Corinthians 10 from Verse 23-33, Everything is permissable- but not everything is beneficial." Everything is permissable"-but not everything is constructive. Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others. So as much as your mini-skirt and big boobs are permissable in public, they cause high blood pressure and are a cause for some wild ideas to others. So dress with caution, especially in public!
