No bail for trafficking suspects

2010-04-30 19:11
Nelspruit - Nine Nigerians arrested in connection with human trafficking remained in custody after they did not apply for bail as expected in the Ermelo Magistrate's Court on Friday, Mpumalanga police said.

Spokesperson Captain Leonard Hlathi said the men appeared briefly and their case was postponed to June 4 for further investigation and to set a trial date.

The men faced charges related to kidnapping and contravention of the Sexual Offences Act as there was currently no law in South Africa on human trafficking, he said.

The men were arrested after they allegedly took a number of women forcefully from around the country to Ermelo, where they were forced into prostitution.
