No gay serial killer - police

2011-10-11 14:14
Johannesburg - Police have denied they were investigating the possibility of a serial killer preying on gay men in Johannesburg.

"We are not looking at one specific person... cases are being investigated individually and progress has been made in some," Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said on Tuesday.

He said it was impossible for one individual to have been responsible for all the killings.

A man was already on trial in the South Gauteng High Court for one of the killings, while two Zimbabwean men were being extradited for another murder. Police had leads for suspects in other killings too, Dlamini said.

On Tuesday, The Star reported that a murder of a 47-year-old gay man in Northcliff, Johannesburg, in August had striking resemblances to five other killings of gay men in the last 18 months.

The man was found bound and bludgeoned to death in his home, with no sign of forced entry and minimal theft. Dlamini would not be drawn on a possible motive for the killings.
