Johannesburg - There are currently no pending criminal cases against former prosecutor Glynnis Breytenbach, despite reports that she could face a number of charges, including corruption and racketeering.

Beeld reported on Friday that no police docket has been opened against her, and her name does not even appear on the police's system, meaning she has never been charged.

This comes a year after it emerged the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) was investigating criminal charges against Breytenbach. A final report allegedly recommended that she be criminally prosecuted for alleged money laundering, fraud and corruption. An audit of her lifestyle and role in several companies was also recommended.

Requests by Breytenbach and her lawyer for more details of the charges were apparently ignored.

Breytenbach confirmed to Beeld that police had not taken a warning statement from her, which is a requirement when a criminal case is being investigated.

Grudge

It was reported earlier this week that Breytenbach was not concerned by the alleged charges, and challenged the NPA to go ahead and prosecute her if it thought it had enough evidence.

DA leader Helen Zille reportedly said the NPA had a grudge against Breytenbach, because she was fighting for the independence of the NPA.

Breytenback is now a DA MP. She was suspended from the NPA in 2012 and faced a lengthy disciplinary hearing, which found her not guilty of the charges against her.
