Stellenbosch - Gay rights groups have welcomed the University of Stellenbosch's (US) decision not to draw up policy guidelines concerning sex in residence rooms or gays in residences.
"I think the rector, Prof Chris Brink, realised what was happening and put his foot down. He is the big diversity man on campus," said Mia Cloete, chairperson of the US Lesbigay society.
"No gay person will have the confidence to come out of the closet with those regulations in place."
The director of gay rights group Triangle Project, Dawn Betteridge, said her organisation was pleased with the decision.
"We will offer our services if the US decides at some stage in the future to draw up a policy concerning sexual orientation."
