Johannesburg - A man accused of killing a farmer near Leeudoringstad, North West, appeared in the town's Periodical Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, police said.

Joseph Hala, 24, was denied bail and the matter was postponed to 2 December for further investigations, Sergeant Kelebogile Moleko said.

He was arrested on 25 October after he and two accomplices tried to rob the farm Droekraal. The trio tied up two workers, a man and a woman.

When the farm owner arrived a few minutes later he was shot dead. The men allegedly put him in the boot of his car and fled the scene.

The two employees managed to untie themselves and pressed a panic button which alerted the neighbouring farmers.

One of them saw the men leave in the farmer's vehicle and contacted another farmer in the area. They gave chase and a shoot-out ensued.

Two of the alleged robbers died on the scene and Hala was arrested.

Police confiscated four firearms.

Hala was charged with murder, house robbery, and kidnapping.
