Johannesburg - A 41-year-old man was killed when he was struck by lighting during a thunderstorm in Kang village near Tosca, North West Premier Thandi Modise said on Saturday.

This brings the death toll caused by flooding in the province to eight.

Over 700 families were affected after heavy rains caused floods in the area.

Fourteen houses in the Bona Bona village was still not accessible on Saturday and four bridges linking about 26 villages were also damaged, Modise said.

A team from the provincial government would be deployed on Monday to assess the damage to the road infrastructure and housing as a result of the flooding, said Modise.

Food parcels, blankets, mattresses and cottage tents were distrubuted and the processing of social relief grants had commenced.

Modise urged people to exercise caution when crossing flooding rivers and streams and advised them to inform authorities of threatening conditions for early intervention.
