North West protesters in court

2012-05-17 21:55
Johannesburg - Twenty-seven people appeared in the Makgobistad Periodical Court on Thursday following a protest in Logagane Village outside Mahikeng, North West police said.

The protesters, aged between 19 and 65, were arrested for barricading roads in Logagane Village early on Thursday morning, Warrant Officer Sam Tselanyane said.

They were released on a warning and would appear in the Mahikeng Magistrates' Court on July 18.

The residents started barricading the roads at around 02:00, Tselanyane said.

The police were called to the scene at 4am and tried to get them to disperse because it was an illegal protest.

"Protesters refused to co-operate," said Tselanyane.

"At about 10:00 protesters were forcefully dispersed by the police with teargas and 27 suspects aged between 19 and 65 were arrested."

He said the residents were protesting about the municipality's failure to deliver on a promise to build a clinic and a community hall in the village.
