Johannesburg - North West residents will be heading to the polls at the weekend to elect new traditional councils in three districts, The New Age reported on Friday.

Voting was expected to take place at designated polling stations from 07:00 until 20:00 on Saturday.

Councils would be elected in the districts of Ngaka Modiri Molema, Bojanala and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Momphati, and would serve for five years.

Local Government and Traditional Affairs spokesperson Dineo Lolokwane said all registered members of rural communities would be eligible to vote for the 40% of the traditional council which comprised of ordinary members of the community.

"The other 60%, which is to be appointed by Kgosi [a Setswana term for chief] will consist of members of the royal family," said Lolokwane.
