Northern Cape cop appears over rape

2012-05-14 16:06

Kimberley - A constable accused of raping a woman appeared in the Upington Magistrate's Court on Monday, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said.

Spokesperson Moses Dlamini said the matter was postponed to Tuesday, as the 29-year-old constable's attorney was not present in court.

Dlamini said he would remain in custody and was accused of raping a 28-year-old woman in the early hours of Saturday.

"He allegedly offered the woman a lift home from a tavern, but instead he drove to a remote area in the vicinity of Groblershoop Dam where he raped her."

The constable was arrested soon afterwards, and was handed over to IPID investigators.

He should be charged and sentenced much more heavily than usual. He should be trustworthy and honorable. This is the equivalent of having a pedophile as a babysitter. He should actually hang!
