Johannesburg - A police officer has been arrested for allegedly killing a man and wounding two others in Warrenton, Northern Cape, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old constable was arrested on Saturday and would face charges of murder and attempted murder, IPID spokesperson Moses Dlamini said.

He allegedly shot three people at a tavern in Warrenton in the early hours of Saturday while on duty, in full uniform, and in possession of his service pistol.

It was not clear why he was at the tavern, Dlamini said.

"He got involved in a fight with two men at a local tavern and he shot an innocent bystander in the foot. He allegedly fired another shot in the air."

He then allegedly chased the two men and fired shots at them.

"One was injured in the thigh and another was fatally wounded at the scene," Dlamini said.

Billy van Wyk, 39, was admitted to Warrenton Hospital. Alister Spaigen, 24, was treated and discharged on the same day.

The dead man was identified as Lionel Mentjies, 18.
