Northern Cape school puts CCTV in toilets

2012-08-16 13:02

Kimberley - Pupils and parents at the Northern Cape High School in Kimberley are objecting to the installation of closed circuit television cameras in the school toilets, it was reported on Thursday.

The Volksblad reported that the school installed CCTV to curtail vandalism and bullying.

However an unnamed parent, the father of a matric pupil, told the newspaper his daughter no longer felt comfortable using the school toilets, as she found the cameras intrusive

The Volksblad reported that pupils had complained that the school had failed to tell them about the cameras.

Headmaster Henk Brand said no cameras had been installed in the actual toilet cubicles, but that there were cameras directed at the washbasins, and at the backs of boys standing at the urinals.

"We certainly aren't watching the girls' toilet cubicles or the front of the urinals," he said.

Brand reportedly said the basin areas were a constant source of aggravation to school authorities, because pupils scrawled on the walls, stuffed paper into the pipes or left taps running.

He said the cameras were installed a few days ago, and that his intention was to explain the system in detail at a school assembly on Monday.

"These cameras will benefit the whole school, increase general safety and prevent bullying," he said.

    sad

      sachasea - 2012-08-16 16:12

This must be unconstitutional. Who the hell puts cameras up in rest rooms? Not even airports do that. Sies these people are sick in the head.

      izaan.bryant - 2012-08-16 16:34

Tree Spirit - You just don't know about it in the airports.

"he father of a matric pupil, told the newspaper his daughter no longer felt comfortable using the school toilets, as she found the cameras intrusive" Does she have something to hide? If bullying is happening in the toilets, what would the fathers response be if his daughter was bullied?

there is obsolutely nothing wrong with that, this other dad of a grade 12 pupil is he for real! its 4 other kids well being.....and so many nasty thing r being done in d toillets, so i really like the principal of that school

  • bruce.wells.963 - 2012-08-16 13:29

My sympathies are with the school. Parents should not complain about the cameras, rather wonder with what standards the kids were brought up to vandalize everything!

  • ophelia.louw - 2012-08-16 13:35

whats next? cameras in the classrooms? oh wait... some schools already have that. Being watched all the time like you are in prison will also make me feel uncomfortable

      moss.nteo - 2012-08-16 13:55

mxm,Ophelia, please re-read the article and understand the significance of this measure.

      grant.callaway.50 - 2012-08-16 16:02

Yeah, and they should get rid of headmaster, teachers and prefects who look out for unruly behaviour too! Parents dare not keep an eye on their kids either...I mean, everyone's innocent, right!? DOWN WITH POLICEMEN!!!!

  • alec.stafford - 2012-08-16 13:41

Well, maybe once they've seperated the chaff from the wheat, they can remove the cameras.

  • brytzishiri - 2012-08-16 14:01

Dont like the idea of some pervert teacher watching my daughter undress

      arm.witmens - 2012-08-16 14:07

What is she doing in the boys bathroom?? - "We certainly aren't watching the girls' toilet cubicles or the front of the urinals"

    Very good Headmaster very good!

  • thabo.thorn - 2012-08-16 14:04

Does the school headmaster have a daughter? I dont think such disgrace should be tolerated in school. he needs suspention, that school is for the community and the community should decide what to do!

      mary.kircher - 2012-08-16 14:15

read the article again Thabo - the cameras are not in the toilet cubicles, only on the washbasins to prevent vandalism

They should not be in the rest rooms FULL STOP. I'm sick of this big brother is watching you crap. Soon you won't even be allowed to fart without the threat of legal action. Police State here we come.

      grant.callaway.50 - 2012-08-16 17:22

@Tree Spirit - are you okay with our kids going to school in slum-like conditions? Are you happy that they must drink from taps where the basins have been stuffed with condoms and tampons? You dont mind them using loo's that have poo on their seats? Some things need to be sorted out, and unless you are happy to fork out for wages on security guards stationed inside each toilet, then best you come up with another idea to get rid of the riff-raff before you shoot down other logical suggestions...

      sachasea - 2012-08-16 17:36

Grant - This story probably has far more to do with the inefficiency of our teachers and education system than it has to do with the actual kids themselves. Of course I want manageable solutions to these problems, but installing CCTV is a total cop out in my opinion and will bring more problems than it solves. Why not get school security (if they even have any) to check in to the rest rooms regularly to make sure that things are in order. That way you give someone some useful work to do and afford the kids some real protection. Cameras can only act as a deterrent, they're useless when it comes to actually doing anything if and while a crime is being committed. The damage has already been done before they're of any help.

      grant.callaway.50 - 2012-08-16 18:20

@Tree - you've got that one backwards! Besides, kids use warning systems. One will stand outside to watch for people in authority approaching. As soon as a guard approaches, the lookout will simply walk into the loos and say "drop it guys". Unless you are stationed inside the toilets full-time, you will not catch anyone, nor will you deter anyone from doing anything!! Yes, the damage has already been done by the time the video is viewed, but at least you can punish the culprit. And the argument stands true for both vandalism and drug abuse/dealing. Trust me - kids take advantage of "privacy rights" - and your kid can become a victim because of it. Remember, these cameras are NOT inside the actual toilet cubicles, so if your daughter really needs her privacy...well...she can have it. What's the problem??

      Johan De Beer - 2012-08-16 20:28

Yes, not you. Come off it. Do you have a better solution?

  • damonsb - 2012-08-16 14:08

If that`s the case...then I blame the pupils for the installation...meaning...it cost the school 1000`s a month for unnecessary waste. Behave and it will be removed

      riette.nothling - 2012-08-16 17:09

I have to agree with you, if the kids were better behaved then these kinds of things won't be needed, even more scary is that girls are doing these things! Though I do feel the school should have handled it a bit better.

  • lydonmcg - 2012-08-16 14:20

The basins...OK...but what are they being pointed at the urinals for? Talk about uncomfortable.

  • ndou.miranda - 2012-08-16 14:38

Good question John. I feel that they should have first discuss this with parents and the purples as well.

      Johan De Beer - 2012-08-16 20:27

Wahahahaaa! The "purples"! Now I have heard it all!

  • donthato - 2012-08-16 15:20

Our brothers&sisters are miscreants because the parents have failed in raising them; CCTV the hell out of them! I see a desperate principal here! Give him a rod whilst he's at it! Yes this has the potential to be abused but better this than the current downward spiral we on! You have a problem with it - go home school your "angel"!

  • manu.dibango.96 - 2012-08-16 15:59

Cameras in toilets is wrong full stop. Worse childrens toilets.

      sachasea - 2012-08-16 16:27

Exactly right Manu. If that doesn't encourage pedophilia I don't know what will.

      grant.callaway.50 - 2012-08-16 17:28

@manu and Tree Spirit. I'm sure if you volunteer your time to keep watch on the toilets, the school would be glad to take down the cameras.

  • marthinus.olivier - 2012-08-18 18:41

See article http://www.peherald.com/news/article/4843, I laid a complaint, regarding CCTV cameras also in an Primary School girls and boys toilets, the headmaster argued the same, not facing toilet area only on basins, The constution is clear "right to privacy", any place where an individual feel he/she has a form of privacy is a prvate place! The SGB in this school is now liable and should face Civil claims as they ignored the instruction from the Dept of education, they should all be suspended with immediate effect!

  • makholosanaai.nyawuzantleki.7 - 2012-08-29 12:46

wow that is so sad,,,wat made them to install cctv,,,is it because of their needs to see front urinals of girls....
