Not in front of child, mom begs rapist

2012-02-03 10:49

Bloemfontein - A Free State nurse who dedicated her life to helping victims of rape and violence, became the victim of rape and violence herself in her own home on Wednesday night.

She was overpowered and raped by an intruder, while her mother and child were with her in the house.

Police spokesperson Captain Rulene Kühn said the man attacked the 40-year-old nurse in her bedroom, where her young child was also sleeping. He said he was going to rape her.

The woman pleaded with him not to do it in the bedroom. She was then raped in another room.

'Barbaric and cowardly crime'

Free State health department spokesperson Jabu Mbalula on Thursday expressed his shock on behalf of the department. He called it a barbaric and cowardly crime on a valuable member of the health department.

“It is with great shock that we learn of the tragic incident, especially as it was committed against very valuable member of the community. Our official is someone who tirelessly serves her community.

“The department will do everything in its power to support her and her family in this difficult time.”

Janine Rowley of the organisation Women against Rape (WAR) also condemned the incident.

Rowley said a woman was raped every 9 to 23 seconds in South Africa.

“I pray that they will arrest the rapist. It is too bad that our legal system is much too lenient regarding rapists and sometimes they are back on the street after two months. Government has to deal with these criminals.”

What a savage country we live in.

      Janice - 2012-02-03 11:01

I agree, if the law were harsher, maybe there wouldnt be as much crime. Just look at countries like Saudi, etc.

      Jeeves - 2012-02-03 11:06

I dream of Billions shoved into advanced education programs - like state of emergency all-hands-on-deck education programs while we institute some kind of harsh marshal law system with death penalties for rape and murder. A decade should of that should change a lot of things!

      stuart.steedman - 2012-02-03 11:07

That is a completely retarded analogy, @Janice. In many Muslim countries, women who are raped are then charged (and often executed) for adultery. Is that what you're suggesting? Think before you link, honestly.

      Jeeves - 2012-02-03 11:14

@Stuart: I didn't read Janice' comment like that. Her comment was contextually applicable to South Africa. We all agree that something harsher has to happen to the criminals here instead of a slap on the wrist and early release to repeat offend. Maybe you should be the one doing more thinking.

      Janice - 2012-02-03 11:15

Stuart, then why dont we read about any crime happening in those countries????? Because the people know the price, so they DONT do the crime, use YOUR brains!!!

      Anthony - 2012-02-03 11:18

it is my opinion that every man who sexualy forces himself on a woman, and where the woman says no------ should face the death sentance without any discussion or debate ---ONE TIME _ KILL HIM

      mlungisi.botha - 2012-02-03 11:24

Janice McMaster and stuart: Dont for one moment think Saudi Arabia is crime free its not. What stuart says is absolutely true. Pick some other example but not KSA, I've lived there and I know what I'm talking about. Why no reports? You take your free press in SA for granted and assume it exists everywhere? Think again.

      lebo.lathane - 2012-02-03 11:28

"a woman was raped every 9 to 23 seconds in South Africa." Can our lawmakers PLEASE PLEASE grow a pair and punish all convicted rapists by 'cutting it off'. Clearly the death penalty is not about to come, so cutting it off, I think, will go a long way towards deterring this barbaric behaviour. I know the Constitution is always used against such, but at times like these, we need to consider whether it is really worth it to protect the human rights of a rapist than bringing justice to those violated. This is sickening! We can't keep on putting these animals in jail (when clearly it is not working) and expecting it to stop. FFS!!! What will it take really!!! Our mothers, sisters and daughters are are having their basic human rights violated by these animals!

      Bryan - 2012-02-03 11:39

Savage indeed but the mentallity of these disgusting pigs is non-existent and if the Prez can do it why cant they... Give me just 5 minutes in a locked room with one of these bastards, they would beg me to kill them!!!!

      Willie - 2012-02-03 12:00

@ Janice Mcmaster i think you are misinformed about this countries, kindly do some research ,you will be shocked. Our goverment need to amend the law regarding rape

      Jeffrey - 2012-02-03 12:03

Stuart is correct. If Janice is so keen on Sharia justice I wonder how long she would be prepared to put up with the misoginy in Islamic countries. She wouldn't be allowed to show her face, drive a car, and if she got raped she would be the one who would be ostracised with every chance she would be legally stoned to death. I understand Janice's point, but she used a bad example to get it across.

      Squeegee - 2012-02-03 12:15

Jeeves, are you 14? Do you have any comprehension what living under martial law means? You want our SADF troops running around with guns and the right to meet out their type of justice. Grow up.

      procold2 - 2012-02-03 12:59

brett its not the country its the people, i agree with anthony death sentence for rape " ONE TIME KILL HIM"

      Nina - 2012-02-03 13:14

Its not the country, its the disgusting choices people to make. Raping is a choice. Our laws are in place but we definetly need a zero tolerant approach, thats the only way maximum punishment will be handed down, otherwise a judge is forced to look at mitigating factors and all that stuff.

      Pulverturm - 2012-02-03 13:31

Janice, you don't HEAR about crimes and people being executed there because they have draconian media laws, like the ones that are being proposed here that prohibit the dissemination of such information. Trust me, when you or a loved one are being executed for a "crime" like adultery then see how you feel about Sharia law.

      ThandaMzansi - 2012-02-03 13:34

If the penalty for rape was castration, then these small minded idiots might have more incentive not to act on their vicious thoughts. After all, most of them think with their pants, not their brains, so losing their 'stuff' might make them choose to 'rape' their hand rather than innocent victims.

      Hugo - 2012-02-03 15:33

Janice, the number of people executed in Saudi is always a double digit. That is besides those that are 'amputated' for theft. However I agree that a harsher sentence should be in order and I have no doubt that the law will take its course. @Brett, savegery is everywhere

      flysouth - 2012-02-03 17:08

Janice - you miss one critical fact here - those Muslim countries are dictatorships, secular or religious, but always repressive and with little or no freedom of the media - the news relating to social conditions, crime etc., out of such places is generally what you would expect - ie.e nothing, nada, zero! I do however favour much harsher penalties for rapists. The problem that arises of course is that there are in fact so many false accusations of rape by vengeful women! Perhaps chemical or actual castration might act as a deterrent since no existing law has managed to do that in SA? Then of course we hit another brick wall - with the abysmal record of SAPS to detect, investigate and successfuly prosecute such crimes (far less than 10%) even death becomes no deterrent for the simple reason that perpetrators know that they are unlikely to ever face justice - or if they do, to be convicted!

      Al - 2012-02-03 18:12

@ all people attacking Janice's comment. Janice did not condone KSA laws in their entirety. She was looking only at the piece in her mind related punishment she thought they had for RAPE. Play the ball not the man.

      Al - 2012-02-03 18:14

I agree with Lebo and Thanda, Castration is the answer to our RAPE problem.

      Jeeves - 2012-02-03 19:38

@Squeegee That's all you got out of my comment? Half empty glasser or argument troll? I get the feeling that you are most likely trolling but I'll humor the question. 'Some kind of' <--- It means I am not sure, slightly insecure of the motion but am of the opinion that we a system that would temporarily suck the air out of the room for harsh crimes. This to buy us a decade or so where we throw every ounce of available energy into multiple levels of education, life skills development and basic relational sciences. Obviously it is a pipe dream right now but it sure is nice to dream sometimes. 18 million under the age of 18, app. 13 million in school of which 50% on average do not finish high school. Our future is in some deep dudu if we don't do something drastic!

      carpejugulim - 2012-02-04 08:29

As much I enjoy the thought of castrating rapists that are found guilty there is always the possibility that instead of deterring rapists that kind of punishment may work against itself. Rapists could resort to murder or maiming a victim to prevent identification. Yeah I know, I sound like the fun police but punishment for any crime in SA is more like a holiday at the taxpayer's expense than a real punishment. 3 meals a day, a bed to sleep in and a roof over your head ... who could ask for more? Bring on the Barbie Pink prison uniforms (not the Oros man orange ones that are worn as status symbols) worn by chain gangs that are working under supervision in full view of the public. Face it, if you are found guilty you lose all rights. There is no reason that ablebodied prisoners cannot earn their keep instead of being coddled all the time. In any country there are running repairs that need doing and by utilising prisoners they are also learning a skill. By making a stay in prison a public and embarrassing experience, implementing harsher sentences (not necessarily longer stays) the mindset of a potential criminal will change over time. ie Do I really want to spend a year fixing roads in my barbie pink uniform doing heavy manual labour every day where everyone can see me?

      Squeegee - 2012-02-04 09:58

Jeeves, do you really think the military will willingly give up power once it has control. You know very little of world history. I understand the desire to see drastic measures, but this is not the answer.

      Matthew - 2012-08-30 10:59

Bring back the Death Penalty or Castrate them.Make them Eunichs or something.JUST DO SOMETHING!!!

thats so horrible...these 'people' really know how to attack 'at the roots' and stop good being done to fellow humans. Our race is losing the plot, and evil prevails. Good luck human race...you need it! hope they catch this sick son-of-a-b!tch

      Jason - 2012-02-03 10:59

Pete - seems our race lost the plot some time ago.. We are effed!!

      Peter - 2012-02-03 11:00

Modern society's roots is becoming an unfathomable entity, that really needs to be kept in order somehow...but where does it start? and where does it end? and how do we do it?

      Lorenzo - 2012-02-03 11:36

"9 to 23 seconds in South Africa" !! That means that around 3 women were raped while I read this article!!! THIS COUNTRY IS DISGUSTING!

      Sharon - 2012-02-03 12:53

A woman is raped every 9-23 seconds. My question: Is this statistic based on reported rapes only?

      Hugo - 2012-02-03 15:37

@Sharon without a doubt. However for the most part, the perpetrator is known to the victim.I think it has something to do with male chauvinism in that some men believe that 'after all she wanted it.' Disgusting

      Joan - 2012-02-03 15:41

Humankind is rather horrible Peter. That is why I prefer dogs. I also hope they catch this person and deal with him accordingly. But they probably won't. Isn't it sad?

  • Jamiu Peleowo - 2012-02-03 10:59

Sick, very disgusting! The perpetrator should face the full might of the law.

      Eldon - 2012-02-03 11:03

I'm sorry, but our justice system is so pathetic that the "might" of the law won't suit as enough punishment for this crime. Vigilante justice sounds fair to me... Maybe then they wouldunderstand what it feels like being overpowered and humiliated like this. I bow my head in shame thinking that they are called part of the human-race. Barbaric!

      Anthony - 2012-02-03 11:34

eldon --i agree --it makes me ashamed to be a man bring back the death sentance for rape full stop all the first world intelectuals ,democrats constitutionalists, scientists and pinkos will tell u the death sentance dosent work --what BS-- if the punishment for rape was death I promise u we wouldnt be raping 4 woman every minuite in sunny south africa

  • Martin - 2012-02-03 10:59

    death sentence

      Hugo - 2012-02-03 15:40

A harsh sentence like 200years,capital punishment a bit disproportionate

      Jeeves - 2012-02-03 19:45

I sometimes wonder if repeat offenders for Rape and Murder shouldn't get an automatic 'go to firing squad' card. @Hugo - They broke into my house and tried to rape my wife. (Very) thankfully they did not, but even the thought of that potential violation makes me want them off this earth. Rape is on par with murder. The dead feel nothing whereas rape victims have to live with it for the rest of their lives. Go chat to some rape victims and comment again.

  • Tammy - 2012-02-03 11:01

SKD, really? I did not know dogs could be graded according to their morals. Good dogs and bad dogs,,, Mmmm,, So what do bad dogs do that make them bad. Don't tell me they bite - that's not a value judgement, just aggressive behaviour. Dogs don't exercise choice according to what is good and bad.

  • Trevor - 2012-02-03 11:08

So SICK AND TIRED of hearing about rape in SA, what will it take, must Jacob Zuma and every politician and judge have their wives and daughters raped before they act and bring back the death penality....??????? Or must they be raped themselves...I say, catch them then hand them over to the familes of the victims!!

We are supposed to be the most intelligent species on earth. Yet we are the cruelest, most sadistic, evil, uncouth animals here! Society becomes sicker by the day and we just become so used to these horrors that we let them pass us by without a second thought. If a government cannot/will not create laws to protect the good citizens, then is it not our moral obligation to make our voices heard and make those lawmakers take action? Every day thousands pf babies are born into this country and I ask myself-"What is their future?" I as a parent am bringing a life into a lawless society with very little chance of a bright future! I find that to be cruel!

      AyGeewils - 2012-02-03 12:00

      Chantal - 2012-02-03 12:01

It is not about sex for them. It is about power and violence. Which is why castration would not help much either - only serve to frustrate them even further and they'd probably turn into murderers. Just hang the bastards - then society has one less sick, twisted mind to deal with.

      jowza1 - 2012-02-03 13:58

why would we be interested in his private life

  • Catherine - 2012-02-03 12:30

Sadistic cold hearted human being. He should be handged and his .. cut off

  • Kerrols - 2012-02-03 12:39

Why do you all have to argue about another man's crime, regardless he commited a crime and we should be supporting the victim not entertaining eachothers insecurities..... This is why SA cannot go forward..too much built up anger.

  • EyesEars - 2012-02-03 12:44

Jabu Mbalula, sympathetic words and financial / medical help are not going to change what yet another victim had to go through to become just another statistic, nor is it going to solve the incompetence of the justice system and all involved, nor is it going to change the sick attitudes of these sick @#$%^ and the saddest part of all, nor is it going to keep them in prison, make a bicycle of someone else in prison or give back the dignity of each young child, teenager or adult, that has ever been raped. Somewhere along the line, it is impossible for me to comprehend that these @#$^& can be re-habilitated. What are each and everyone to do, when these @#$%^ have more rights, than the person who is actually doing something good in society? When will there be an awakening and people start realizing that they are responsible for alot of innocent "blood" on their hands. But, they want to be leaders?!?

  • hetty.oliver - 2012-02-03 12:45

    Public castration for all rapists!!!

      Tammy - 2012-02-03 13:33

  • Liesl Wilmot - 2012-02-03 13:10

We are all so quick to show our disgust on comment pages-but what else do we do? Has any of us participated in a march or done anything in actively trying to put pressure on our government to do something about the rape of our women, daughters and even sons. By tomorrow we have forgotten

      Tammy - 2012-02-03 13:34

No liesl we don not forget. Do you honestly think the goverment will listen? They don't give a s...t

      AyGeewils - 2012-02-03 14:22

Some of us are trying - www.youtube.com/watch?v=-F--abwhjFw - but this scurge is very difficult to fight and its no just in this country.

  • Peter - 2012-02-03 13:15

Government deal with these criminals ... oh please, get real.

      Tammy - 2012-02-03 13:35

agreed Peter. They are only interested in getting richer and making the poor poorer

  • markus.botha - 2012-02-03 13:20

I have a theory: Africa is AIDS ridden. Proving that unsafe sex is rampant in South Africa. So, what do you think the chance might be of syphilis being the main cause of all these mentally ill people in South Africa.

      Rainbow - 2012-02-03 15:53

...... and Top tv wants to bring out a porn channel! SIC!

      Hugo - 2012-02-03 15:56

      a very wild statement

      Heiku - 2012-02-03 16:16

Its a theory Hugo you idiot. Even if he didnt say it's a theory... it would still be a theory.

      Hugo - 2012-02-03 16:32

@Theorist Heiku, even then its a very doff theory.Let me tell you why. Syphilis is less likely to make you insane if passed thru sexual contact because thats the natural mode of passage. It disturbs your brain if passed from an infected preggie mom to unborn infant(including blindness)because thats not the natural mode of transmission. Another example is Ecoli bacteria. You have and I have it,we got it from our moms.It will not kill us because it was passed naturally to us.However if ingested, it will kill you ass e.g in Europe some people perished because of Ecoli infested cucumber. so either way it is a wild and unscientific statement(or theory, whatever floats it for you)

  • shane.jacoby - 2012-02-03 13:32

As a man in today's society... If I had to catch a rapist... God help his soul, for I won't have mercy on him... And no, I won't kill... I want him to suffer for the rest of his life and I'll make sure he does... Rapists are cowards and deserved to be punished as harshly as murderers... Looks what happening men... We are turning into a third world Africa country... They are raping woman and physically hurting and or killing them... It's now up to us to take action and cut those bastards dicks off... I know that's not the way to speak on a forum, but how else do you put it?

      Aston - 2012-02-03 13:41

Are you under the impression that SA is a first world country?

      shane.jacoby - 2012-02-03 13:42

No... I was hoping we weren't as bad as the rest of Africa... But I guess we getting there pretty damn fast....

      Hugo - 2012-02-03 15:58
