Johannesburg - Traffic will be disrupted in the Johannesburg CBD on Tuesday due to a National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) march, metro police said.

"Motorist are advised to stick to the eastern side of the CBD between 11:00 and 15:00," Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

The march would start at the Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown then proceed to Henry Nxumalo street.

"The expected 5 000 marchers would turn left into Marshal Street then Simmonds and Anderson Street where a memorandum would be handed over."

The march would then return to Mary Fitzgerald Square through Sauer and Jeppe streets.

Motorists were advised to use Rissik, Troye, Mooi and Bree streets as alternatives to avoid traffic congestion.

More than 220 000 Numsa members are expected to start an indefinite countrywide strike on Tuesday for a double-digit wage increase.

The union wants a 12% salary increase, the scrapping of labour brokers, and a one-year bargaining agreement.

Numsa members are expected to march in Johannesburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth, George, Cape Town, and East London on Tuesday.
