Nurse implicated in claims scam

Johannesburg - A nurse who was caught allegedly stealing a patient's medical records was arrested in Lusikisiki, the Eastern Cape health department said on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old woman was arrested at the St Elizabeth hospital on Monday afternoon, departmental spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said.

The nurse was being monitored by the hospital after her name was mentioned as one of the people who were colluding with lawyers who approached families to make fraudulent claims against the health department.

"We have information that three families were booked in a hotel in Durban to meet with lawyers who convinced them to take the department to court over false claims," said Kupelo.

The lawyers would convince relatives of patients to sign statements alleging that the hospital had been negligent in handling of patients.

"This costs the department millions in litigation as the department has no records with which to defend itself in court."

Kupelo said his department became aware of the practice in February 2010 and its investigations implicated certain members of the staff.

"Her name was mentioned and as I said, the hospital started monitoring her movements."

The woman would be reported to the SA Nursing Council while the department conducts its own internal investigation.

And, after being on full pay for 4 years, nothing happened.

today's nurses are not the same as we had in those years. those years the nurses had a passion for what they were doing but today, it's all about what they can get out of the deal and to hell with the patients.

There can be no doubt that Sunny South Africa is one of the most enterprising countries in the world. Especially on the corruption front. One of these fine days the badies will come up with a racket to convert badies to goodies. In fact it will be so good that even the goodies will be seen as badies. Besides joking we must face the truth that the upright lawyer is basically just as corrupt as the villian he represents. The judge is just as good as the contents of his bottle. And the cop's toils are in proportion to the level of his pockets. Now the liaison of crooked nurses and lawyers gives scope for utter revulsion. Since the earliest of times the lawyer and the nurse were respected professions. Today they must be held guilty even before proven innocent. That is what the world is coming to on the Southern tip of this continent.

The lawyer has been a respected profession? Since when?
