Johannesburg - A man on Interpol's most wanted list was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport after arriving from the UK, Hawks spokesperson Musa Zondi said on Monday.

"He was arrested on Sunday after we received an alert when he left the UK. The alert is called a red flag notice, it's a way for Interpol to track people."

The 47-year-old man was visiting South Africa for a meeting of the Islam Channel - a London-based Islamic broadcaster.

Zondi did not know what the man was wanted for.

The man was being detained in an undisclosed location.

"We will talk to Interpol or the country which he came from, to know what to do with him... depending on what the outcome of the talks are, he could be sent back to his home country or he may go back to the country who sent us the red alert."
