Obsession leads to murder of teen boy, 14

2012-08-02 10:36

Johannesburg - A 14-year-old boy from Vanderbijlpark has been stabbed to death, allegedly by the son of his mother's boyfriend, according to a report on Thursday.

Dante Chan, 14, was found on Tuesday afternoon with a steak knife protruding from his chest, in the driveway of the alleged attacker's home, the Beeld reported.

His mother, Yolanda Coetzee, 37, who found her dying son when she came to pick him up after cricket practice, told the newspaper that she had tried in vain to save her child.

"I fell down next to him and said, 'just breathe son, you're a tough one, fight to live', but it was too late."

A third-year student from North-West University, who was arrested in connection with the incident, had been obsessed with the victim for a long time, according to Coetzee. She is in a relationship with the alleged attacker's father.

"They had tried sending him away to get help. We moved into a high security complex five months ago, precisely to get away from him."

Police spokesperson Kinnie Steyn said Chan had been stabbed multiple times, and that the suspect would appear in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate's Court soon.

@ squeegee.pilot - That so true hey... This world is going f%&king crazy! People eating each others faces, shooting innocent people in cinemas. Wars raging everywhere... And the list goes on and on and on... The end of days is near!

      Squeegee - 2012-08-02 11:43

Michael, don't forget people forming groups called "Fiends of the Youth League" and supporting Juju - how crazy is that?

@michael.vanrheenen.9: Actually its much better than the last 2000 years, that would be normal, and part of everyday war. Take 50 years ago, if someone had to mention the fact that the bible was untrue, it would be reason enough for them to be killed, and the death would still have been seen as acceptable and justified. The fact that it is becoming much less, less enough in fact, to be making headlines as bizarre, is a sure sign that we may actually, finally, as a species, be progressing intellectually. Sadly, we still have a far way to go though.

Not sure why human rights activists are so driven to keep people who do stuff like this alive. Whoever did this has given up their right to human rights and should be put down like an animal. Simple maths.

Agreed! We need to start eliminating filth from our society. We desperately need the death penalty in this country.

What colour or ethinicity are these people who come to South Africa with obsessive tendensies? R.I.P Dante Chan. May woe betide those who sent you away.

  • eyesears.handsfeet - 2012-08-02 11:50

RIP Dante. No one can hurt you anymore. Yolanda you knew there were a problem, why did you still continue with the relationship? A third-year student from North-West University, who was arrested in connection with the incident, had been obsessed with the victim for a long time, according to Coetzee. Surely you could have found happiness with someone else, somewhere else?

Some woman would rather have a affair than look after their childrens interests. You read about this sort of thing all the time. Abuse, Abuse, Abuse. Are these mothers crazy?

      dxg.trust - 2012-08-02 12:54

The days where the children came first - no matter what - are long gone in some homes! Parents can date and as much as they want and look for love when they want, but when your child's safety is involved you put your own desires aside for a while and put your child first! Boyfriends will come and go. Your children are a gift from God. The horror, shock, guilt and sadness of loosing a child can never be overcome.

An adult having a "intimate relationship" with a 12 year old CHILD is wrong anywhere in the world. It doesn't matter whether its homosexual or heterosexual, it cannot be consensual! This grown man is a paedophile and he took advantage of a child. He should be in jail. Who knows how many other kids he preyed on. If I found out my child is being molested, I wouldn't go hide in a high security complex. Report the case and put the sick man in jail, away from other kids
