Off-duty cop hijacked, shot, left in boot

2011-12-07 17:52

Johannesburg - A police officer has been shot and hijacked by three men near KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga, police said on Wednesday.

The officer picked up three men hitchhiking on the road in Vlaklaagte village at about 19:00 on Tuesday, Captain Madimetja Ledwaba said.

He was off-duty and driving his VW Golf to Verena village at the time.

Passers-by found the vehicle abandoned in the same village a few hours later.

Ledwaba said the officer was found locked in the boot with a bullet wound in the stomach.

"He was seriously wounded and could not fully explain what had happened," he said.

"It appeared the hijackers abandoned the car after it broke down because of mechanical problems."

The officer, in his late 20s, was admitted to KwaMhlanga Hospital.

The hijackers were still being sought.

Picking up 3 male hitchhikers at night? a cop aren't you warning people against such things? haven't you heard about these kind of cases?

I,m very sorry for the cop and may this be a reminder to all to keep a hammer in your boot in case of this kind of emergency so you can break out the tail light and wave your hand out to hopefully alert someone of your predicament!

Same crap happened to my uncle who was left paralyzed and died 16 months after the incident. It's never a pleasing thing to hear about generosity backfiring. It's the festive season now and many people are gonna be driving through long roads with people trying to hitch-hike, do the wise thing, drive right along!
