Johannesburg - An off-duty policeman was shot and wounded in central Durban, said ER24 on Friday.
ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said the policeman was shot in the leg on the corner of Russell and Queen streets just before 20:00 on Thursday.
Paramedics on the scene stabilised and transported him to hospital in a serious, but stable condition.
"It is believed that the off duty policeman was on his way home to Kwa Mashu, when he was approached by five suspects," said Banks.
He said the men tried to rob the officer of his belongings and beat him up, before shooting at him.
The policeman returned fire.
No one else was injured.
Police are investigating, Banks.
