Johannesburg - A fire safety officer from the Johannesburg Emergency Management Services was assaulted and his car stolen by a taxi driver and his passengers in the city centre on Saturday morning.
Spokesperson Malcolm Midgley said the incident occurred after the officer stopped the driver who had been driving through red traffic lights around 5.30am.
"The officer warned the taxi driver to be careful and asked him not to ignore the rules when the incident occurred."
One of the passengers then stole the officer's car and crashed it on the Grayston bridge over the M1.
Midgley said the officer suffered minor injuries. No arrests have been made.
