Durban - A man in his 70s was killed and a man in his 20s is fighting severe hypothermia after their vehicle plunged down an embankment in Richmond, Pietermaritzburg, on Thursday night.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics found an SUV lying on its roof, 50m down an embankment.

"Two bodies lay roughly 10m and 20m from the vehicle. On assessment, paramedics found the man in his 70s had succumbed to his multiple fatal injuries. Nothing more could be done and he was declared dead on scene.

"The second patient, a male in his 20s, was found in a critical condition and suffering from severe hypothermia," Meiring said.

Treatment and advanced life-support interventions were performed on the patient before he was carried to the ambulance at the roadside, Meiring said.

The cause of the collision is not known but local authorities are investigating, he said.
