ONE person was killed and several injured in accidents around Pietermaritzburg at the weekend.

In a head-on collision in Edendale Road in Pietermaritzburg on Friday one man died, another sustained serious injuries and a pregnant woman sustained moderate injuries.

ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said paramedics found the man, named by police as Siyabonga Mncwabe (30), lying in the road and he was declared dead at the scene.

Another man was treated for serious injuries while the woman, believed to be about six months pregnant, was treated for moderate injuries.

Also on Friday, a side impact accident at the intersection of Blackburrow Road and Alan Paton Avenue at around 11 pm left three people injured, one seriously.

In another incident, also on Friday, a man and woman on a motorbike were killed in a crash also involving a small bakkie and a truck on the N3 highway at Van Reenen’s Pass.

Near Durban, a man driving his wife to hospital slammed into an accident scene in the early hours of yesterday morning, paramedics said.

Paramedics and police were at the first accident on the N2 near the old airport helping a driver who had been flung from of his vehicle after crashing into a concrete barrier.

Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha said paramedics heard brakes screeching and ran to get away from the scene. They jumped onto the concrete barrier and witnessed the vehicle slamming into the ambulance with such force that the side door flew off and the vehicle was flung into the police van.

Botha said medics stabilised the patients before transporting them to hospital. — Witness Reporter-News24
