Johannesburg - A 58-year-old orange picker was killed when a tractor rolled over her in Patensie, Eastern Cape police said on Wednesday.

Bettie Boesak was picking oranges on Monday when a tractor needed to be moved, spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Priscilla Naidu said.

"No one knew how to drive it, but one worker attempted to do so. When he started the tractor, it moved backwards and hit the ladder on which Boesak was standing."

She fell and the tractor drove over her. Boesak suffered multiple head injuries and died on her way to hospital.

No one else was injured and police opened a culpable homicide docket.
