The police's Captain Sarah Mcira confirmed that the woman, Reeva Steenkamp, had been shot in the head and arm.

She died at the scene.

Hours later after undergoing police questioning, Pistorius left a police station accompanied by officers.

He looked down as photographers snapped pictures, the hood on his gray workout jacket pulled up, covering most of his face.

Pistorius will spend Thursday night in prison, before being appearing in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Friday, where he is expected to face a murder charge.
