Oudtshoorn driving school owner gets bail

2012-06-26 16:37

Johannesburg - The owner of an Oudtshoorn driving school charged with corruption was granted a R5 000 bail on Tuesday, Western Cape police said.

Walter Mathe, 32, was the sixth person arrested in a corruption case involving traffic and driving school officials, police spokesperson Captain Bernadine Steyn said.

"He appeared in the Oudtshoorn Magistrate's Court shortly after he handed himself over."

Three traffic officers from Calitzdorp and Oudtshoorn, a driving school owner and a driving school instructor appeared in court on Monday.

They were arrested on Friday and Saturday during an operation set up after police received a tip-off.

Police were apparently informed that people were flocking to Oudtshoorn to buy fraudulent learners' and drivers' licences.

Mathe's case was postponed to 27 July for further investigation.

With the high number of accidents in town (Oudtshoorn) involving these Code 10 learner drivers, I am hoping that this number will now decrease with these arrests. Just last week Tannie Bessie (on the corner of Vrede and Park Road) had her front wall and stoep removed by an incompetant learner - and another bakkie was side-swiped in Voortrekker Road. Why don't they set up a learner driving zone in Bridgeton or Bongelethu areas instead of going through the residential and schooling areas? (See Oudtshoorn Courant for more info)

Sorry Janet, for the bad news , but in the townships they will kill small kids playing in the streets and their lucrivive scheme would have been dead long ago
