Pietermaritzburg - The management of Pietermaritzburg’s Cascades Shopping Centre have promised that renovations under way at the mall will not change its character.

A Clarendon resident, who would not be named, said she was upset on visiting Cascades on Friday and seeing that the trees in the parking area had been chopped down.

“It had such a lovely open feel to it. Cascades has always meant a pleasant and restful shopping experience. I hope that they will not tamper too much with it,” the woman said.

Cascades consultant Lynda Lees ­assured patrons that the result of the renovations, being carried out as part of an expansion exercise, would be worth the change.

“As part of our development, we have a landscape architect on board to ensure that the exotic trees that have been cut down will be replaced by indigenous trees on completion.

“Unfortunately, nobody likes change and disruption, but they are all part of the process. We apologise for the inconvenience this upgrade will cause and hope that our customers with stand by us during this exciting change,” she said
